I finally experienced that “Aha!” moment when you just KNOW that you got the shot. THE shot. Sometimes it’s not ’til after I get it into the computer and play around with the photos a bit when I decide which shot is really it, but I knew immediately when I reviewed this shot on my camera that this was the one.
Tonight’s shoot was definitely a team effort. I was originally just going to shoot the sword by itself, but Tay was around so I was like, maybe you should hold it! And then i figured she should dress the part too. We then solicited Gretchen’s (link) help to do her hair and make up. I originally asked for Anime Buns, but Tay looked too “cute” and not intense enough, so we ditched those and my roommate Erin applied product and took over the hair stylist role.
Gretchen Holding Tay’s Place for Lighting Tests
I originally had the idea of having Tay hold some very Chinese kung-fu esque (and yoga-esque) poses with the sword, but the paper on the floor was not really conducive to difficult poses (but it WAS conducive to ripping). So after a few attempts we resorted to simpler poses. I had Tay sit on the floor and grabbed a couple of pics.
So that scar going down her left eye isn’t make up at all, it’s just the shadow from the sword hitting her eye in just the right way. As much as I’d like to say that I planned it that way, it was just plain ol’ luck.
This one was just trying a few different poses. I liked the look in her eyes in this one though.
Anyway, as I said, once I threw the backlight behind her for the meditation shot, I knew we had it. Here is my setup:
See you tomorrow!
